On April 1, 2014 , by 23:46 UTC occurred along the northern coast of Chile , about 100 km NW of Iquique , an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 . This earthquake , according to the advance estimate by the USGS , must have been felt with maximum intensity VIII ( Mercalli ) in the zone nearest the seismic source .
Given the location and characteristics of the seismic event , the Center for the Pacific Tsunami Warning ( PTWC ) issued a tsunami warning at regional level , taking registrations have been confirmed in the tide gauge stations located in coastal areas closest , with maximum wave height 2.1 m in Iquique observed about 15 minutes after the event source . The regional warning has been canceled about 5 hours later.
The earthquake occurs in an environment dominated by the tectonic interaction between Nazca plate and South America , which converge at a rate of about 7 cm per year . This region of the globe is marked by the occurrence of earthquakes of great magnitude , as the 1960 (magnitude 9.5 ) which was the largest magnitude earthquake recorded instrumentally .
The earthquake was detected in all stations of the national seismic network , with the first waves of the earthquake was recorded at 23:58 [ below: Examples of records at some stations of the seismic network ] .
