The average temperatures in April 2021 varied considerably across Europe. Values below the average were found in most countries (Fig. 1), however in the continent far east and western part of the Iberian Peninsula April was warmer than normal.
Regarding precipitation, this month was drier than the average in the European continent western and southeastern parts , while in most of Eastern Europe and parts of the Iberian Peninsula there were more humid conditions than average.
April in mainland Portugal was classified as very hot in temperature and normal in precipitation (Fig. 2).
The average value of average air temperature, 15.01 ° C, was 1.85 ° C higher than normal value 1971-2000 (values of average air temperature higher than those now registered have occurred in 15% of the years since 1931).
The average minimum air temperature, 9.76 ° C, was the 10th highest since 1931 (highest in 1945: 11.18 ° C), with an anomaly of +1.63 ° C.
The average maximum air temperature value, 20.25 ° C, was also higher than the normal value, +2.07 ° C and was the 5th highest since 2000 (highest in 2017: 23.27 ° C).
Concerning precipitation, the average value in April, 82.5 mm, was very close to the normal value 1971-2000 and corresponds to 105%, with important contrasts in the spatial distribution. In general, in the North and Center regions the precipitation values were higher than normal, and in the South lower; in particular, in the Algarve the percentage of precipitation was less than 50% of the average value.
During the month there were showers, sometimes with hail and accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the territory, being locally strong in the periods 8-10, 13-16 and 23-28, this last period was due to LOLA depression.
According to the PDSI index at the end of April, there was an increase in the area and intensity of meteorological drought in the southern region, with the Algarve region experiencing moderate drought.
The percentage distribution by classes of the PDSI index in the territory is as follows: 5.8% light rain, 74.7% normal, 11.9% weak drought and 7.6% moderate drought.
