Crustaceans survey 2022

Campanha crustáceos 20222021-06-14 (IPMA)

The 2022 edition of the research survey Crustaceans was performed onboard the research vessel Mário Ruivo between June 8 and July 3 2022. The survey was performed in the scope of “Programa Nacional de Amostragem Biológica” (PNAB) / Data Collection Framework, which is a responsibility of the Division of Modelling and Management of Fisheries Resources (DivRP) of IPMA.

The survey takes place annually, during 21 days, in June-July, covering the continental slope of Alentejo (Norway lobster Functional Unit 28) and of Algarve (Norway lobster Functional Unit 29) regions, following a sampling plan with 76 bottom trawl hauls using a shrimp net. This year the survey included additional activities, such as the 2nd edition, onboard of Mário Ruivo, of the Floating University from the Eurofleets+ program.

The objective of this survey is to estimate the abundance, spatial distribution and length structure of the populations of Norway lobster and deep-water rose shrimp, the main target species of the survey in the Southwest and South of Portugal, as well as of other species such as blue and red shrimp, blue whiting, anglerfish, megrims, catsharks and silver roughy. Additional data are also collected about oceanographic conditions, biodiversity and marine litter (MFSD).

The survey had 20 participants, 10 from IPMA (8 from PNAB, 1 one from project A-Fish-DNA-Scan and 1 from project ProtectInvad), a student from Harvard University in a summer internship and 4 international students from the Floating University of the Eurofleets+ program.
