2023-05-15 (IPMA)
From the 22nd to the 26th of May 2023, in Funchal, Madeira Island, a week of work will be held by the Data Assimilation group of the ACCORD consortium - A Consortium for COnvection-scale modeling Research and Development (link 1 ).
The ACCORD consortium aims to develop state-of-the-art regional numerical meteorological models of the atmosphere, which are used as a basis for the analysis and prediction of general conditions of the state of the atmosphere. This community development involves 26 countries in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, including Portugal through the participation of IPMA specialists, I.P..
IPMA runs the AROME limited-area model on a convective scale and large space-time discretization (link 2) on a daily basis over the three distinct geographical domains: Mainland Portugal, Madeira Archipelago (see Figure) and Azores Archipelago. To date, it is making efforts to create a Data Assimilation system on the Mainland and Madeira domains, coordinating the efforts of countries that do not yet have this technology in operation. These systems use observations from surface and altitude meteorological networks, radar and meteorological satellites to provide numerical models with the best image of the state of the atmosphere at a given moment, contributing to the numerical model producing more realistic forecasts of convective phenomena. , contributing in particular to a better location and forecast of maximum precipitation and wind.
This meeting has the logistical support of the Regional Government of Madeira and will be held at Campo da Barca.
