collaboration: IPMA, IEO and the MARINE INSTITUTE

2023-08-10 (IPMA)

As part of an ongoing collaboration between IPMA, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, Spain) and the Marine Institute (MI, Ireland), for the installation of a low-cost network of “landers” in the Atlantic Arc, the IPMA researcher A. Miguel Santos participate in the LANDERFLEET cruise (Fig. 2) aboard the IEO’s RV Ramón Margalef (Fig. 1). The aim of the cruise was to launch 20 landers (Fig. 3) and to lift an instrumented lander located in Cañón de La Gaviera (Fig. 4). This later “lander” was equipped with time-lapse imaging system and oceanographic sensors for monitoring the Marine Protected Area of Cachucho. The 20 "landers" were launched in 5 radials off Santander, Gijón, Ribadeo, Laxe and Vigo, with 4 "landers" in each, located approximately at the bathymetrics of 50, 100, 200 and 500 m. The launches and collection of the "landers" was done using the LanderPick2000 and LanderPick-6000 system (Fig. 5).
