IPMA researchers Cláudia Afonso e Carlos Cardoso participated as experts in the Joint FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization)/WHO (World Health Organization) Consultation on the Risks and Benefits of Fish Consumption.
This is a committee of experts in the areas of public health, nutrition, toxicology, food science, biostatistics and risk-benefit assessment that was established to review all knowledge and data on this topic that have resulted from scientific studies since 2010, when the last committee of experts convened and issued its respective report. In addition to the two IPMA researchers, 19 other experts from different countries and specialties met during the week of 9 to 13th October in Rome, Italy, at FAO headquarters. These meetings and follow-up work resulted in a summary report with the experts' main conclusions, which was published by FAO/WHO on the past October 31st (it may be consulted: https://www.fao.org/3/cc8503en/cc8503en.pdf).
It is worth noting that the report concludes that the benefits of fish consumption clearly exceed the risks, thus recommending the consumption of this food group so important in the Portuguese diet, a conclusion in line with the scientific research of these two IPMA researchers in the area of risk –benefit.
In this regard, we would like to highlight some of the papers published by the two researchers on the risk-benefit assessment associated with fish consumption by the Portuguese population:
