Project PDP3 - PT-INNOVATION-0003 – Research Vessel Mário Ruivo: Hull Mounted Scientific Equipment |
The PDP3 “Research Vessel Mário Ruivo: Hull Mounted Scientific Equipment” aims at installing a set of Hull Mounted Equipment (HME) on the Research Vessel (RV) Mário Ruivo. This upgrade will foster its capacity as a modern ocean sensing platform, aiming at improving fishery research, seabed mapping and marine geosciences, for the assessment of living and non-living resources and bioprospection at oceanic areas, namely, at the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone and at the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, as well as at the extension areas of the legal continental platform. The acquisition of the new set of hull-mounted sensors will provide new capacities for the research vessel allowing for:
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has deep experience in research vessels management with a wide range of marine technologies and related and will cooperate with IPMA, on the definition of the technical specifications of the hull-mounted equipment that fit better the specifications of RV Mário Ruivo. Under the PDP3 - RV Mário Ruivo: Hull Mounted Scientific Equipment, IPMA, will be able to conduct research cruises that support the application of European directives, namely the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Common Fishery Policy and the obligations related with the monitoring of the Marine Protected Areas, within its national (and international) obligations.
Funding: This project has received funding from Islândia, Liechtenstein e Noruega, under the EEA Grants.
EEA Grants programme: hrough the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are partners, in the internal market, of the Member States of the European Union. As a way of promoting a continuous and balanced strengthening of the economic and trade relations, the parties of the European Economic Area Agreement have established a Multiannual Financial Mechanism, known as the EEA Grants.
The EEA Grants objectives are to reduce the economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area and strengthening the bilateral relations between beneficiary and donor countries. For the period of 2014-2021, a total contribution of 2.8 M€ were attributed to the 15 beneficiaries’ countries, and a global allocation of 102.7M€ will support Portugal programmes.
Project promotor: Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, I.P. (IPMA)
Project partner: Institute of Marine Research (IMR)
Project operator: Direção-Geral de Política do Mar (DGPM), Portugal [ Blue Growth ]
EEA Grants contribution: € 2.000.000
National contribution: € 500.000
Project total budget: € 2.500.000
% de EEA Grant: 80%
Beneficiary Target Group: Relevant stakeholders at the national, regional and/or local levels, including scientific, fisheries and educational community.
Expected outcome: The RV Mário Ruivo will be a fully-fledged multidisciplinary scientific platform equipped with modern hull mounted survey equipment for seabed mapping, environmental, ecology and fisheries research to support marine knowledge and insure sustainability of Blue Growth economic activities and available for a broader community in marine research, education, and training areas.
The RV Mário Ruivo received funding under the Blue Growth Programme by EEA Grants Portugal and with DGPM-Direção-Geral de Política do Mar as the programme operator.
