2021-04-20 (IPMA)
Following the restocking experiments that have been carried out since 2001, IPMA has recently carried out yet another action to release of some Meros (Epinephelus marginatus) specimens on the Algarve coast.
The released individuals were already born on IPMA´s Pilot Fish Station at Olhão (EPPO) and are identified externally with a yellow numbered mark, the action being included in the scope of the DIVERSIAQUA II Project - MAR-02.01.01-FEAMP-0175.
We hoped these individuals to be able to settle in the wild and contribute to the population recovery. Unfortunately, Mero has a "Danger Conservation Statute", two categories before it was declared Extinct in nature, as identified in the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species).
Nevertheless, and although it´s capture is prohibited in recreational fishing, we ask if anyone found these animals to inform IPMA (with sighting location and, if possible, the brand number), by calling 289 700 500.
