2026-10-08 (IPMA)
Between 22 and 24 September, IPMA hosted a series of activities under the @aquafish0.0 project, funded by the @interreg.atlanticarea Programme (EAPA_0062/2022), dedicated to the valorisation of underutilised marine resources and the development of more sustainable food solutions.
On 22 and 23 September, the project partners met at IPMA to review the results achieved and discuss the valorisation of fisheries and aquaculture by-products, the development of new food products, pilot activities, and their environmental and economic viability. Topics such as food safety, regulatory requirements, marketing strategies, and the acceptance and dissemination of these products among different audiences were also addressed. The programme also included a technical visit to AquaNostra, providing partners with an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into solutions and experiences related to aquaculture and to promote knowledge sharing between research, innovation and the productive sector.
On 23 September, IPMA also organised a Transnational Expert Panel on food safety and risk–benefit assessment, bringing together experts from Portugal, Spain, Ireland and the United States of America to share knowledge and perspectives on these challenges.
Culminating these three days of work, the event “Blue Circular Innovation: From Aquaculture to Sustainable Food Solutions” was held on 24 September, organised by IPMA with the support of @s2aquacolab. The event was attended by the President of IPMA, Dr José Guerreiro, and brought together researchers, industry representatives and other stakeholders to explore how underutilised marine resources can be transformed into safe, sustainable food products with market potential.
The programme included presentations, opportunities for exchange between research, industry and the market, round-table discussions, and a gastronomic experience demonstrating the potential of these resources as innovative food solutions.
Three days of knowledge sharing, collaboration and blue innovation, with a common goal: to transform underutilised resources into new opportunities for a more sustainable food system.
