Researchers from IPMA have published a pioneering study on the vermetid Vermetus triquetrus, a marine gastropod with a significant presence along the Portuguese coast but still largely understudied by the scientific community. The research focused on characterising the biochemical composition and biological activity of this organism, using specimens collected from the Mira river Estuary.
The scientific paper entitled "Unveiling the Hidden Biotechnological Potential of the Vermetid Gastropod Vermetus triquetrus: Insights into an Unexplored Marine Resource" was published in the journal Marine Biotechnology. The study revealed high levels of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and identified V. triquetrus as a potential source of polyphenolic compounds. The results highlight the value of further investigating this marine resource and exploring its potential applications in the nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors.
This research is part of the GENEMARE_PORTUGAL – Blue Biobank project, funded by the MAR2030 Programme, which aims to expand knowledge of Portuguese marine biodiversity and promote the sustainable valorisation of marine living resources. The project contributes to the development of a national biological repository, supporting scientific research and the creation of innovative solutions for the future.
