Atmospheric Electric Discharge Bulletin (DEA) for the year 2021 was published. Among the main conclusions we highlight:

  • 2021 was the third year with the highest density of atmospheric electrical discharges (AED) since 2010, in mainland Portugal;
  • A value of 0.38 DEA/km2/year was recorded and in terms of the spatial distribution density, two areas of the territory stand out: interior Central region and  Southeast Algarve, in which densities above 3 DEA/km2 were obtained /year;
  • In terms of territorial units, we highlight the districts of Castelo Branco, Guarda and Viseu with values above 0.6 DEA/km2/year;
  • Regarding the days of thunderstorms that occurred in 2021, 106 days were recorded, which is lower than the average for the period 2010-2021, with 140.1 thunderstorm days;
  • The spatial analysis of the number of thunderstorms days distribution reveals that the districts of Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Bragança and Vila Real recorded more than 40 days per year;
  • The months of April, September and June were the ones that stood out with the highest number of thunderstorm days, 19, 14 and 11 respectively, due to the high number of cloud-to-ground AEDs recorded;
  • On September 1st, the highest value of cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud DEA was recorded, 6,336 and 47,826 respectively. Autumn was the time of year with the most electrical activity in the atmosphere, with 50% of 2021 AEDs.
