IPMA at COP 29
2024-11-22 (IPMA)
The 29th edition of the ‘Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’ (COP 29 - UNFCCC) took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, between 11 and 22 November 2024.
The Conference of the Parties is a very important moment each year, as it allows us to check the progress made by each signatory country in meeting the objectives of the Paris Treaty (2015). This aims to achieve the decarbonisation of the world's economies, limit the long-term increase in the average global temperature to below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels and continue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
IPMA took part in COP 29 with a delegation that included the President of the Board of Directors, José Guerreiro and the heads of the Climate and Climate Change Division, Ricardo Deus and the Marine Geology Division, Pedro Terrinha. The sessions attended are highlighted below:

About the session: There will be covered tpics sucha as the potential of natural capital and marine ecosystem services for carbon management; new solutions for monitoring the ocean; protection of marine and coastal ecosystems in carbon capture and management; national progress in the production of ocean renewable energies and the importance of carbon neutrality in maritime transport and ports.

The 29th edition of the ‘Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’ (COP 29 - UNFCCC) began on 11 November, and runs until 22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Conference of Parties is a very important moment each year as it allows us to check the progress made by each signatory country in meeting the objectives of the Paris Treaty (2015). This aims to achieve the decarbonisation of the world's economies, limit the long-term increase in the average global temperature to below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels and continue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
As a State Laboratory with fundamental functions in the knowledge and monitoring of the ocean and atmosphere, IPMA accompanies and collaborates with the national and international scientific community, seeking to deepen knowledge of the ocean and play an important role in the interconnection between scientific knowledge and its use in supporting public policies.
This year, the Institute is once again a partner of the Ocean Pavilion, organised by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), a world reference in ocean research. This pavilion, located on the Blue Zone of the Conference, aims to bring together world leaders in ocean science, engineering and policy to emphasise the importance of the ocean for life on Earth and to highlight the relevance of the ocean for public policy.
