Eurofleets+ SINES Expedition

The Centre of Marine Sciences of Algarve (CCMAR-Algarve) and the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) are leading the Eurofleets+ SINES Expedition, wich will take place between September 11th and September 20th 2022. This Expedition aims to explore the link between SW Iberian oceanography and climate change.
The Eurofleets+ SINES Expedition it´s a joint international initiative will be conducted by an international team of scientists, with different expertises, aboard the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa. The main goal of the expedition is to study the effects of climate change on the process in which deep, cold and usually nutrient-rich water rises toward the surface (i.e., upwelling) off SW Iberia coast.
In the lead scientist words, Marcos Fontela, the Eurofleets+ SINES Expedition: "This is a unique opportunity to do multidisciplinary research at high level. The first step and proof of concept for something bigger in the future!".
Science behind the Eurofleets+ SINES Expedition
During the research cruise the scientific team will collect, process, storage and analyse samples from: seawater, plankton and marine sediments. This will allow to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the water column as well as the plankton living in the water column. Furthermore, sediment samples - wich provide an invaluable key to study past climate changes - will be collected at the sea bottom.
The overall objective of the expedition’s participants is to identify the changes and risks for marine ecosystem functioning and its biodiversity deriving from the potential impact of climate change on Iberian upwelling fronts, where usually are found good fishing group.
