IPMA researcher is contact point

The European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) a coordinating framework designed to align and integrate Europe’s ocean observing capacity, promote a systematic and collaborative approach to collecting information on the state and variability of our seas, and underpin sustainable management of the marine environment and its resources.
Miguel Piecho-Santos from IPMA was invited to be the National Contact Point in the EOOS Operations Committee. This committee represents the diversity of the ocean observing implementers at national, regional and pan-European levels, and is one of the governance bodies of EOOS. Its main objective is to help with the long-term sustainability of ocean observation efforts in Europe and the progressive implementation of EOOS.
The first meeting of this body took place (virtually) on 24-25 November 2020. One of the points on the Agenda was the discussion on the role that National Contact Points should have as drivers of sustained observation of the ocean in their countries. This is a role that the Portuguese Contact Point intends to develop in collaboration with all operators and institutions relevant to the observation of our ocean.
It is also planned to make an inventory of the infrastructures, technologies and human capacity of operational observation systems at national level.
