Summer School at IPMA Tavira

2023-09-20 (IPMA)

Between the 10th and 16th of September 2023, the “Summer School” on “Coastal Geosystem Services – The case of the Ria Formosa” took place at the Tavira Molisciculture Station of IPMA, within the scope of the project "EDUCOAST (EEAGRANTS) - A Coastal Geosciences Research Station to promote nature-based education”.

The training was attended by 17 students, national and foreign, most of whom were attending master's courses or doctoral programs in the areas of Earth and Marine Sciences. The team of trainers included 15 teachers and researchers specialized in the areas of geodiversity, blue carbon, hydrodynamics, oceanography and coastal dynamics.

The topic of the impact of coastal geosystems on society was addressed, particularly with regard to the resilience of barrier islands and carbon sequestration by salt marshes, taking into account past and future trends.

The Ria Formosa served as an “open sky” laboratory for carrying out theoretical and practical activities, given that the objective of the training was to carry out practical activities, in which students effectively got their “hands on”.

The program was varied, with lectures by guest researchers, a guided boat tour, two days of fieldwork that included collection of sediments and vegetation and acquisition of water parameters as well as topographic and aerophotogrammetic surveys, bathymetry and current characterization. The data acquired was then processed and on the last day, Saturday the 16th, the students worked on a topic of their choice which they presented in a 3' pitch.

“Summer School 2023” was covered by RTP3 on the program "Europa Minha", Season 9, Episode 13 (link below)..

The EDUCOAST project, promoted by IPMA, is financed by the Blue Growth Program of the EEA Grants and has as partners the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira and the Portuguese Environment Agency.
