Bordalo II Sculpture on IPMA Gardens

IPMA received recently on it´s facilities in Algés, dedicated to the Sea and Marine Resources, a sculpture by artist Bordalo II "Magellan Plastic Penguins", representing the Magellan Penguin.
This work of art was created for the Portugal Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2021/2022, and was inspired by the symbolism of the legacy of the first Circum-Navigation voyage by the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães, whose V Centenary was celebrated during the last 4 years, ended in 2022.
The sculpture, can be seen in IPMA’s gardens in Algés, and was made with plastics collected throughout the seas covered by Magellan's voyage representing urgent warnings for the planet, the main one being the pollution in the oceans caused by human action. Bordalo II focuses his work on themes related to the sustainability of the planet, through sculptures of animals, especially of endangered species..
IPMA also participated in several initiatives of this fifth Centenary, including the e-book publication "Os peixes na rota de Magalhães - Proposta de nomenclatura portuguesa" (find out more at the link below).
As IPMA´s President, Miguel Miranda, mentioned in the book preface "The Magalhães voyage (...) has definitely shown that the ocean unites and does not divide, that it promotes contact between cultures, and that it can be the main vehicle of humanity. For this to be possible, we have to build common forms of language and communication and join traditional knowledge, which is local, with science, which is universal. This work is a small contribution in that direction.
