On 5 May, IPMA took part in the final event of the AZA4ICE project, held in Sète, France, and organised by Pôle Mer Méditerranée under the theme “Towards the Transition to Inclusive and Circular Aquaculture: From Pilot Regions to Policy Impact.”
The event highlighted the key results, methodologies, and lessons learned throughout the project, showcasing the contribution of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation to the development of more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient aquaculture systems. As a project partner, IPMA actively contributed to discussions on advancing circular approaches within the sector.
The meeting brought together around 80 participants, including researchers, entrepreneurs, students, policymakers, and institutional representatives. Contributions were also made by leading organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Ifremer, Cépralmar, and the Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute. Discussions focused on strategic topics for the future of aquaculture, including blue biotechnology, innovation, and emerging challenges facing the sector.
During the roundtable session, “Action Plans: Reflections from Participating Countries on the Future of Aquaculture in Their Regions,” IPMA researcher Joana Rodrigues presented the main challenges and opportunities associated with fostering a more circular and inclusive aquaculture model in the Ria Formosa, one of Portugal’s most important coastal lagoon systems.
The high level of engagement and interest demonstrated by participants underscored the significance of the project's outcomes and reinforced the need to promote circular, sustainable, and socially inclusive practices as key drivers of the future development of the aquaculture sector.
