Total Requalification of IPMA Vessel

The research vessel (NI) Diplodus, part of IPMA's fleet of vessels, has entered the Marina Formosa Algarve Boatyard in Olhão for a scheduled maintenance and major refit of the vessel. The aim of this operation is to ensure the continuity of its operational capabilities and to increase its reliability in supporting the Institute's scientific missions.
The NI Diplodus, dedicated to operations in coastal areas, plays a key role in research and monitoring projects related to small-scale fishing, fisheries resources, marine geology and geophysics. The docking includes work on the hull, propulsion systems, scientific equipment and other technical improvements that are essential for the safety, comfort and effectiveness of the missions, as well as for guaranteeing the quality of the data collected.
The intervention constitutes a profound modernisation and revitalisation of the NI Diplodus, reaffirming it as a vessel of excellence for coastal research. The investment, worth almost half a million euros, is funded by the Mar2030 Programme, under the MOPPA Programme.
The main objective of this programme is to obtain basic information to improve the management and governance of small-scale coastal fishing and harvesting, with a view to the sustainable exploitation of the resources and ecosystems in which these important activities take place. These objectives fall within the scope of the Common Fisheries Policy and the Strategic Plan for Small-scale Fisheries 2022-2030.
The NI Diplodus is scheduled to return to activity in the summer of 2025, when it will be ready to resume the monitoring campaigns of the bivalve banks along the Portuguese mainland coast, as provided for in the MOPPA programme.
IPMA would like to thank the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão and Tunipex - Empresa De Pesca De Tunideos, S.A., for their support in the towing operation from the fishing harbour to the Marina Formosa Algarve Boatyard.
