On April 16, the Lusófona University of Guinea-Bissau (ULGB) hosted a training session delivered by Rita Esteves, an oceanographer from IPMA, focused on the application of an ocean observation device on a fishing vessel that is expected to arrive at the Port of Bissau at the end of the month. This initiative is part of the international network FVON – Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (https://www.fvon.org/), which promotes the collection of ocean data from fishing vessels, contributing to the advancement of coastal observation, to a better understanding of changes in the ocean, and the improvement of oceanographic forecasts.
The training was attended by two representatives from the Maritime and Port Institute (IMP) and members of ULGB, who will form a local task force. This team will be responsible for ensuring the proper condition of the equipment, overseeing its operation, and guaranteeing that the device is continuously deployed on active fishing vessels, thus maximizing data collection.
This initiative represents an important step towards positioning Guinea-Bissau and the West African coast on the map of collaborative ocean observation, strengthening the production of essential information for ocean monitoring, short-term weather forecasting, climate tracking, and the sustainable management of marine resources.
