Artisanal Fishing Arts in Portugal

The Maritime Museum of Ílhavo magazine "Argos" recently published (October 2020) the article "Artisanal Fishing Arts in Portugal", by IPMA´s researchers Rogélia Martins and Miguel Carneiro.
The authors refer that "in this fishery the methods of capture and the arts used by fishermen and shellfishers are inserted in deep traditions and customs of the fishing communities, resulting from a practical knowledge of the occurrence, seasonal abundance and behavior of the species and also of the natural conditions and environmental aspects of the places and fisheries where they operate. "
The article refers to the various types of traditional fishing that exist in Portugal, as well as several instruments still used, such as "arrilhada", halyard, hen, majoeira among many others.
Finally, it is also mentioned that "artisanal fishing, despite its activity based on the use of ancient fishing methods and methods, has proved to be a dynamic sector".
