IPMA hosts delegation from Laoshan Laboratory

2026-10-29 (IPMA)

On 23 October, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) welcomed a delegation from Laoshan Laboratory, a Chinese marine scientific research institution, at its headquarters in Algés. The delegation was received by José Guerreiro, President of IPMA, and Ivone Figueiredo, Director of the Department of the Sea and Marine Resources.

The programme included scientific presentations, as well as visits to the Geology Laboratory and Polo Oeiras Mar, an innovation centre that is part of Portugal’s national Hub Azul network. These visits provided an opportunity to showcase some of IPMA’s key infrastructures, scientific capabilities and areas of expertise in marine sciences.

Based in Qingdao, Shandong Province, Laoshan Laboratory is part of the Ocean Research Centre between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. The visit aimed to strengthen scientific cooperation between the two institutions, laying the foundations for long-term collaboration and exchange. It also provided an opportunity for the delegation to learn more about IPMA’s research activities and innovative approaches in areas such as physical oceanography, ocean observation and forecasting, the mitigation of marine disaster risks, and marine ecological protection.

The meeting represented a further step towards enhancing scientific cooperation between Portugal and China, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration in support of a better understanding and sustainable management of the oceans.
