Do you know what the blue economy is?
Blue economy can be seen as a set of products and services based on human activities that ensure the sustainable exploitation of the living and non-living resources of the sea, that is, ensuring a blue planet. “Innovation for the sustainable development of activities in the field of the sea and the blue economy” was the theme of the “All-Atlantic Summit”, the 6th ministerial summit and high-level meeting between representatives of governments, companies, universities and research centers, which took place between the 5th and the 9th of October 2020, entirely online.
This summit took place within the scope of the research center for the Atlantic international activities - AIR Center, whose headquarters are located on Terceira Island in Azores, and which involve institutions from 13 countries in Europe, Africa and the Americas: South Africa, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Spain, USA, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom and São Tomé and Príncipe.
This edition was attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Manuel Heitor and, in the technical sessions, with the participation of several national entities - AARC, Aquazor, Ciência Viva, IGOT, IH, INESTEC, IPMA, ISR / IST, LSTS / FEUP, MAAC, MARE / FCUL, MARETEC / IST and PwC.
In particular, IPMA was invited to make a presentation at the Extreme Weather session under the theme "Resilience to Coastal Natural Hazards", which is one of the AIR Center's missions. IPMA´s presentation entitled “Portugal - an Atlantic Extreme Weather Lab” (available soon in this article) allowed us to present several examples of extreme weather phenomena that have affected the continental territory and the archipelagos of Azores and Madeira in the last decade and a half, supported by scientific publications meanwhile produced by IPMA human resources. The impacts of extreme weather phenomena on society and the economy were highlighted, as well as the importance of research in the field of meteorological forecast supported by a robust observation network, key factors in the realization of the blue economy.
