Winter 2016/2017

Winter 2016/2017 (December, January and February) in mainland Portugal was classified as normal regarding temperature and dry regarding the amount of precipitation.

The mean temperature value in the quarter was 9.91°C, +0.30°C higher than  normal. The mean value of maximum temperature, 14.86°C, was higher than normal value, with an anomaly of + 1.06°C, being the 4th highest value since 1931. The mean value of minimum air temperature, 4.95°C, was lower than normal, with an anomaly of -0.48°C.

The average value of the amount of precipitation in the December-February quarter, 242.5mm, was lower than the average value corresponding to 69% of the normal value.

Of note in the winter 2016/2017:

• On January 19th, the highest absolute values of minimum air temperature were exceeded in automatic meteorological weather stations with series of about 20 years;

• Between January 14th and 26th, there was a cold wave with duration of 6 to 12 days, in some places of the regions of the Center and coast of the South;

• Between 1st and 4th February, gust values above 100 km/h occurred in some places in the North and Center regions. The highest value occurred at the meteorological weather station of Guarda at 04:20 UTC, 129.6 km/h, exceeding the previous maximum (129.2 km/h on January 23rd, 2009);

• Flooding on February 11th in the eastern Algarve, and particularly in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. Maximum value in 1h of 57.8 mm between 18h and 19h UTC;

• Snowfall in all months of the quarter, highlighting January 19th with reports of weak snowfall in the Algarve (S. Brás de Alportel and Serra do Caldeirão);

• At the end of December 78% of the territory was in weak drought; End of January 95% of the territory in weak drought and 3% in moderate drought; End of February significant decrease of the area in drought, leaving only 57% of the territory in weak drought.
