HOT WEATHER JUNE 2017 - UPDATE

The first 20 days of June have been characterized by high values of maximum temperature, much higher than the normal values for this month, in particular from 7TH June, due to a mass of very hot and dry air. On June 17th and 18th, the previous values of maximum temperature for this month were exceeded in most of the territory, except for the North and Center coastal regions.
In the period from 1st to 20th June, the average value of maximum air temperature in Portugal mainland was 31.2°C, higher than normal at +5.8°C.
The average value of the average temperature was 23.3°C, about +3.9°C higher than normal; The average value of the minimum air temperature of 15.5°C was +2.0°C higher than the normal value.
June 17th was the hottest day so far, with 29.4°C average temperature (+ 10.0°C compared to normal); 39.1°C maximum temperature (+13.8°C compared to normal) and 19.7°C minimum temperature (+6.2°C over normal).
The hottest night occurred on 19th, a minimum temperature value of 20.1°C, with a deviation of +6.6 ° C (compared to the normal of June).
On 6th and 7th June, a heat wave started in the most inland stations in the country, and on 10th and 11th June this heat wave covered the remaining regions of the interior of the territory. From the 15th it extended to some locations in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and interior of the Baixo Alentejo.
According to the PDSI - Palmer Drought Severity Index, on June 18th, the situation of meteorological drought in Portugal mainland continued, with a rise in the whole territory.
As of June 18th about 80% of the territory was in severe and extreme weather drought.
