2025-10-20 (IPMA)
On 8 and 9 October 2025, a team from the Aquaculture Research Station (EPPO) of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) carried out the release of 3000 meagre (Argyrosomus regius) and 2000 European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in the Ria Formosa, Algarve.
The fish, produced in aquaculture facilities, had an average weight of 65 g and 80 g, respectively, and were released into their natural environment to support restocking efforts and help increase local fish populations.
The initiative was carefully planned to take place before the cooling of coastal waters, typical of the onset of winter, thereby ensuring favorable conditions for adaptation and survival of the released specimens.
This action forms part of IPMA’s ongoing commitment to the sustainable management of marine resources and the enhancement of biodiversity in coastal ecosystems of southern Portugal.
