New European Wind Atlas

As part of the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) project, an observational campaign of unprecedented dimensions in Portugal will take place in the Serra do Perdigão (Vila Velha de Ródão) between April and June 2017.
IPMA’s main task is to produce specific forecasts for Serra do Perdigão region, where several sensors and about 50 meteorological towers are currently installed. These towers can have up to 30 sensors that will be used to measure wind speed and direction, air temperature and humidity, among other parameters. IPMA will also participate in this campaign through the launch of weather balloons.
This project will be fundamental not only for future optimization of wind resources, but also to improve the understanding of meteorological phenomena in regions with a complex orography and atmospheric models.
This five-year project (2015-2019) consists of institutions from Denmark, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Latvia and Turkey. The National Center for Atmospheric Research and the universities of Colorado, California, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Cornell from the United States are participating. The Portuguese consortium, coordinated by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), together with the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering (INEGI), the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) and the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere.
