Joint workshop on Marine Sciences IPMA-IMR

2024-11-08 (IPMA)

Experts from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) participated in the “Joint Workshop on Marine Sciences IPMA-IMR”, organized between the 5th and 7th of November, within the scope of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organizations.

The bilateral initiative began at the Algés hub with a seminar for the national scientific community, which was attended by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Norwegian Embassy in Portugal, Karina Asbjørnsen. The themes covered throughout the event were the following: Atlantic observation systems, marine gene banks - blue biobanks, aquaculture, seafood valuation and food security, oceanographic campaigns’ planning and management of research vessels, geophysical characterization and monitoring for the installation of offshore wind energy.

On the second day, the researchers from the two institutions began by visiting the IPMA Department of Sea and Marine Resources, including the Aquatic Animal Pathology and Animal Experimentation Laboratories (LABVIVOS), and then divided into two groups. One of the groups continued the visit to the Marine Geology, Fisheries Resources and Phytoplankton Laboratories and then boarded the Research Vessel Mário Ruivo. The other group visited the Aquaculture Research Station in Olhão. The afternoon was filled with meetings of the different working groups, which allowed a better understanding of the relevant projects and initiatives in the different areas of research.

Supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, through EEA Grants, the “Joint Workshop on Marine Sciences IPMA-IMR” event culminated yesterday, with the presentation of the conclusions and the identification of the next steps for the development of a work program between the two institutes, considered leaders in the field of marine sciences in their countries. The initiative sought to boost long-standing collaboration between institutions and strengthen bilateral relations between Portugal and Norway.
