Extremely hot and dry June

heat2017-07-06 (IPMA)

The month of June 2017 in Portugal mainland was extremely hot and dry. This was the third warmest month of June since 1931, after 2004 (23.25°C) and 2005 (22.81°C). The average value of the average air temperature was 22.34°C, +2.92°C above the normal value.

The mean value of maximum air temperature, 29.57°C, was the 3rd highest since 1931, with an anomaly of +4.21°C, with the highest average temperature of the maximum temperature (30.14°C) occurring in 2004.

The mean value of minimum air temperature, 15.10°C, was the 4th highest since 1931 (highest value in 2004, 16.36°C), with an anomaly of + 1.61°C.

During the month high values of maximum temperature were observed, much higher than the normal values for this month, due to a mass of very hot and dry air, in particular from 7th, highlighting the period from 16 to 19 of June. 17th June was the hottest day, with 29.4°C average temperature (+10.0°C compared to normal); 39.12°C maximum temperature (+13.8°C compared to normal) and 19.7°C minimum temperature (+ 6.2°C compared to normal).

In the period from 16 to 19, more than 90% of the meteorological stations observed maximum temperature values higher than 30°C (hot days). On 17th about 50% of the meteorological stations recorded maximum temperature values higher than 40°C (extremely hot days).

On 17, 18 and 19 more than 50% of the meteorological stations recorded values of minimum air temperature equal or higher to 20°C (tropical nights).

A heat wave occurred between June 7 and 24, lasting 17/18 days in the interior regions of the North and Center (9 stations) and 11/12 days in the interior regions. Most of the coastal regions were not in a heat wave.

Regarding precipitation, the month of June was classified as very dry, with a mean value of precipitation in mainland Portugal of 9.6 mm, corresponding to 30% of the average value.

According to the Palmer Drought Severity Index - PDSI, at the end of June the meteorological drought situation continues in almost all the territory of Portugal mainland. At the end of this month about 80% of the territory was in severe drought (72.3%) and extreme (7.3%).
