Earthquake 7.1 in Mexico

seismic activity2017-09-20 (IPMA)

A major earthquake with magnitude Mw7.1 occurred on 2017-09-19 18:14:39 UTC with latitude 18.584°N, longitude 98.399ºW and depth of 51.0 km (USGS source). This was an inland event at a distance of 5 km from Raboso, in the Puebla state, Mexico, and about 130 km southeast of Mexico City.

The earthquake was the result of a normal faulting within the subducting Cocos plate (USGS source).  The extension of shaking in MI scale is up to VIII, corresponding to severe shaking level, and correlated with moderate to heavy damage (see figure 1).

The earthquake was very strong and occurred in a densely populated area, therefore with 248 fatalities reported until now, including 71 in Morelos, 86 in Mexico City, and 43 in Puebla State. Dozens of buildings have collapsed, including more than 40 in Mexico City alone.

No significant aftershock activity has been observed in the area.
