Seismic activity in Papua New Guinea

On January 22nd, 2017, at 04:30 (UTC) a 7.9 Mw earthquake occurred west of Panguna, Papua New Guinea (North Solomons) at about 136 km depth. This earthquake was the result of a reverse faulting NW-SE orientation, where the Australian plate (Solomon Sea microplate) is subducting the Pacific plate.
The earthquake was recorded in all stations of the national seismic network of IPMA, with the first waves of the earthquake being detected at the station of Bragança, located about 15700 km from the epicentral zone at 04:49 (UTC).
This event caused material damages but no victims were reported.
Initially, tsunami warning messages were issued but the threat passed without any report of a tsunami.
