Visit to the Canning Factories of Matosinhos

2025-07-31 (IPMA)

Invited by the Municipality of Matosinhos, a partner of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP) in the organisation of the COST Slow Memory International Conference, researchers from the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU) of the University of Porto and from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) led the visit "Traces and Ghosts: The Marks of the Canning Industry in Matosinhos", held as part of the conference programme, which took place in Porto from 2 to 5 July.

On 4 July, a guided tour was conducted along a route that followed the traces of former canning factories in Matosinhos. The visit began at Docapesca Matosinhos, passed through several emblematic sites associated with the history of the canning industry, and concluded at the Casa da Arquitectura, also in Matosinhos.

Throughout the tour, participants learned more about the historical, biological, and social dimensions of purse seine fishery, both locally and nationally, as well as the architectural evolution of the canning industry in the city of Matosinhos.

The visit was led by researcher Diego Inglez de Souza (CEAU), with the participation of researcher Diana Feijó (IPMA) and the contribution of historian José Varela (Department of Archaeology and History, Matosinhos City Council).

We would like to extend our thanks to Docapesca Matosinhos, its entire team, and architect Nuno Coelho, director of the fish markets in the Northern region, as well as to the Casa da Arquitectura, for their support and collaboration during the visit.
