2024 Very Hot and Dry Year

The summary of the Annual Climatological Bulletin for the year 2024 is now available.
Globe:
- 2024 was the warmest year since 1850, considering global average temperature data, making it the first year with an average temperature of more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels - a threshold set by the Paris Agreement to significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change;
- The last ten years have been the hottest on record.
Europe:
- 2024 was the hottest year ever recorded in Europe, with an average temperature of 10.69°C; +0.28°C higher than the previous hottest year, 2020.
Mainland Portugal:
- 2024 was a very hot and dry year, the 4th hottest since 1931, with an average air temperature of 16.49°C;
- 64 new maximum temperature extremes and 177 new minimum temperature extremes;
- 8 heat waves;
- Total rainfall for the year was the 14th lowest since 2000;
- Persistent weak to moderate meteorological drought between May and September and December.
