Fisheries and Sea - Project detail

PlasticSea

Project NamePLASTICSEA – IMPACT OF MICROPLASTICS IN THE OCEAN, SEA SALT AND AQUACULTURE
Funding entityFundo Azul
Project leaderUNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE; SAGREMARISCO; SCIAENA; ASSOCIAÇÃO PORTUGUESA DE AQUACULTORES; INSTITUTO PORTUGUÊS DO MAR E DA ATMOSFERA; CENTRO DE CIÊNCIA VIVA DO ALGARVE.
Description

The aim of this project is to assess the current extent of the microplastic impact in the Portuguese coast by monitoring the levels of microplastics in water, biota and sediments to identify possible 'hot-spots' of microplastics contamination and identify their main sources.

The project comprises six work packages:

  1. Monitoring of microplastics (MPs) in the coastal area
  2. Assessment MPs in sea salt Production
  3. Assessment of MPs in aquaculture facilities
  4. Pathways (modelling & data analysis)
  5. Impact on humans
  6. Dissemination

The main objective will be to raise awareness, understanding and the willingness to act in regard to the plastic pollution issue.

The PLASTICSEA project will provide tools for a better understanding of the microplastics pathways in the Portuguese coastal environment and the extent of its distribution in Portuguese coastal waters. Beyond simple monitoring, the innovative approach used in this project connects with important sea economical activities and addresses the impact in humans.
