IPMA Strengthens Meteorological Cooperation with China and Macao

2026-11-05 (IPMA)

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) participated in the 12th Technical Conference on Meteorology with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), held in Beijing on 4 and 5 November 2026. The IPMA delegation included Telmo Carvalho, Member of the Board of Directors, Carlos Ramalho, Director of the Azores Regional Delegation, and Ricardo Tavares, Director of the Madeira Regional Delegation.

During the meeting, the three institutions shared recent developments in their meteorological services and discussed cooperation in areas such as aeronautical meteorology, meteorological observations, satellite applications, numerical weather prediction, artificial intelligence, and the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative.

The conference also established cooperation priorities for the 2027-2028 biennium, with a focus on climate change, extreme weather events, and ocean forecasting. The three institutions further agreed to explore the creation of a cooperation platform for training, technical assistance, knowledge exchange, and institutional capacity development, particularly in support of meteorological and climate services in Portuguese-speaking African countries.
