Sessions dedicated to Circular Aquaculture

From 22 to 26 June, IPMA, in collaboration with Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, promoted a series of sessions dedicated to Circular Aquaculture. The initiative engaged 3rd and 4th grade students from schools in the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira, located in the Ria Formosa area, one of the most important aquaculture regions in Portugal.
Developed within the framework of the European AZA4ICE project, the initiative focused on educating young students on how circular economy principles can be applied to aquaculture, introducing innovative solutions that promote a more efficient use of natural resources and more sustainable production practices.
During the sessions, participants explored, in a practical and interactive way, two aquaculture production systems: Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Students had the opportunity to understand how these approaches contribute to reducing waste, reusing resources and minimising impacts on ecosystems.
Through age-appropriate activities, the initiative fostered knowledge about the challenges facing the oceans and sustainability, highlighting the role of science and innovation in developing food production systems that help preserve resources for future generations.
