2025-11-10 (IPMA)
The 2025 edition of the Portuguese Groundfish survey is being performed on board Faroe Marine Research Institute (FAMRI) research vessel “Jákup Sverri” between November 9 and December 5, under the protocol signed between IPMA and that institute.
On 8 November, on the eve of the campaign’s start, the President of IPMA, José Guerreiro, and the Head of the Fisheries Resources Modelling and Management Division (DivRP), João Pereira, visited the vessel. Built in 2020 at the MEST shipyard (Faroe Islands), the Jákup Sverri, measuring 54 metres in length, is equipped with highly automated systems for oceanographic and fisheries research, including pelagic and bottom trawling, underwater acoustic surveying, hydrographic and seismic operations, ROV deployment, as well as plankton and sediment sampling.
This survey takes place annually, during 30 days in the last trimester of the year, covering the continental shelf of mainland Portugal, following a sampling plan with 96 bottom trawl hauls.
The main objectives of this survey are monitoring the resources available for the bottom trawl fishery and estimating the abundance, spatial distribution and length structure of the populations of several species (such as European hake and Horse mackerel). Data on oceanographic conditions (such as temperature and salinity) and biodiversity and marine litter, under the MFSD (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) which achieves to evaluate the Good Environmental Status, are additionally collected.
The survey is performed in the scope of the National Biological Sampling Program (PNAB), which is a responsibility of IPMA’s DivRP. PNAB is integrated in the European Union’s Data Collection Framework, under the scope of the Common Fisheries Policy. The survey is coordinated internationally by the IBTSWG (International Bottom Trawl Survey Working Group) of ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea), with the official name of PT-IBTS Q4 Survey.
