2025-06-17 (IPMA)
World Food Day was celebrated on 7 June, and to mark the occasion the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) organised a technical-scientific event with the participation of experts, including IPMA.
For the event, ASAE selected the project ‘EuroCigua II - An integrated approach to assess the human health risks of ciguatoxins in fish in Europe’, which was presented by the researcher responsible for IPMA's participation in the consortium, Pedro Reis Costa. The researcher was part of the round table ‘Partnerships and Synergies in Risk Assessment and Communication vs. Financing Options’, moderated by ASEAE's Sub-Inspector General, Filipa Melo de Vasconcelos.
In his presentation, the researcher reiterated the importance of the support provided by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in studying the risk of Ciguatera in Europe, and the importance of the project in promoting international collaborations to respond to a common challenge.
Ciguatera is food poisoning due to the consumption of fish contaminated with ciguatoxins. Although endemic to tropical areas such as the Caribbean or Polynesia, cases of poisoning have been reported in Europe, particularly in Madeira and the Canary Islands. The main objective of EuroCigua II is to contribute to the full characterisation of the risk of ciguatera intoxication in Europe.
The project is funded by EFSA and aims to respond to emerging food safety challenges.
