Recreational Vessels as Observation Platforms

Ocean Observation Project2025-05-27 (IPMA)

On May 14, 2025, the first phase of the “Technology Demonstration Pilots” project took place, an initiative promoted by IPMA and aimed at developing ocean observation and monitoring systems in collaboration with local communities and the private sector.

The first phase of the pilot activity of testing marine observation systems at sea took place on board the ER Libries sailboat, an economical and efficient observation platform, in the area adjacent to the Sado River estuary (see map).

The main aim of this action was to train teams and perfect protocols with a view to developing future marine observation and monitoring actions along the Portuguese coast. The operation of different equipment, sensors and sampling techniques were successfully tested and demonstrated, such as the operation of ROVs and the installation and use of a ferrybox system, as well as the integration and efficient communication of the data collected.

This initiative, which includes the processing and sharing of data for the study of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) and marine biodiversity, is promoted and partially funded by IPMA, under the MAR2030 PNAB DEEPVMEs project.

The project, with the reference "PDT 105/2024 IPMA-BIGLE", also has co-funding from ISCTE's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (AUDAX_ISCTE) with the support of Blue Geo Lighthouse, Lda (BiGLe), as part of the "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Public Administration" (AI4PA) project, co-funded by IAPMEI. The Fundação dos Mares was also involved in this activity.
