2026-07-13 (IPMA)
Between 9 and 11 June, IPMA participated in the 9th consortium meeting of the AZA4ICE project, dedicated to supporting the transition towards circular aquaculture. The meeting was hosted by Fondazione IMC – International Marine Centre, in Torregrande, Italy.
The meeting focused on the presentation and discussion of the project’s results. These included the Action Plan for the development of aquaculture in the Ria Formosa Lagoon, aligned with circular economy principles, the AZA4ICE methodology, validated by stakeholders from the Ria Formosa, and the C-AZA geospatial platform, which will soon be available for public access. Together, the outputs represent an important contribution to the sustainable development of Portugal’s aquaculture sector.
The programme also included a visit to the IMC Foundation facilities and to Cabras Lagoon. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the IMC main research activities, with particular emphasis on the production of flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), a species of significant economic and cultural importance in Sardinia. The visit also provided valuable insight into the lagoon’s environmental characteristics, which are essential for the sustainability of its natural resources and aquaculture activities.
As the project’s final consortium meeting, the event provided an opportunity to assess the progress achieved during the final implementation phase, define the procedures for the project’s closure, and reinforce the partners’ continued commitment to achieving the AZA4ICE objectives and promoting a more circular, inclusive and sustainable aquaculture sector across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
