Between 7 and 9 September 2025, IPMA hosted the annual meeting of INTERMAGNET, a global network of observatories that monitor the Earth's magnetic field, at its headquarters in Lisbon.
At the opening of the plenary session, Maria Ana Martins, member of the IPMA Board of Directors, welcomed the participants, and David Boteler, President of the Executive Board of the International Network of Magnetic Observatories, thanked IPMA on behalf of INTERMAGNET for hosting the meeting (image 1).
Senior technicians Jorge Cruz and Diogo Silva, from IPMA's Geophysics Division, as well as the president of INTERMAGNET's operational committee, Jürgen Matzka, were the organisers of the event. Twenty-three experts in this field participated in person and a dozen online, from various countries (image 2).
The main objective of INTERMAGNET is to establish a global network of cooperative digital magnetic observatories, adopting standard specifications for measurement and recording equipment, in order to facilitate the exchange of data and the production of high-quality geomagnetic content in near real time.
At this meeting, the agendas of the various working groups were initially presented, and then the groups split into several rooms to discuss issues related to their areas of work.
The Magnetic Observatory (STT) of the São Teotónio Geophysical Centre, due to its high-quality data, is part of this network of Magnetic Observatories (image 3).
