2019 the second hottest year on the globe and the hottest in Europe

According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2019 was the second warmest year (Fig. 1) considering historical records since 1850, just after 2016. The average annual global air temperature for 2019 was 1.1 ° C above average, considering the period 1850-1900, which represents pre-industrial conditions: https://public.wmo.int/en/media/press-release/wmo-confirms-2019-second-hottest-year-record

In Europe according to Copernicus Climate Change Service, 2019 was the warmest year ever recorded, with an average air temperature anomaly of 1.24 ° C (Fig. 2).

In mainland Portugal, 2019 was classified as hot and dry. The average annual value of the average air temperature in 2019, 15.58 ° C was 0.32 ° C higher than the normal value 1971-2000.

The average value of the maximum air temperature, 21.54 ° C, was the 7th highest since 1931, with a deviation from the normal value of +1.04 ° C. It should be noted that the 7 highest values ​​of the maximum temperature occurred after 2000

Regarding precipitation, the average value of the annual total, 755.6 mm corresponds to about 86% of the normal value. During the year, the situation of meteorological drought between january and october in the whole region stands out, which still had a week in the months of november and december in the South region.
