Ocean Sciences Meeting

2024-04-05 (IPMA)

The city of New Orleans, located in the state of Louisiana, United States, is not only known for the richness of its culture, music, and cuisine, but also for scientific events held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The Ocean Sciences Meeting, which takes place every two years, is co-sponsored by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and The Oceanography Society (TOS), bringing together the global oceanographic community to share findings and demonstrate the impact of oceanography worldwide. This year, it took place in New Orleans from February 18 to 23, 2024, bringing together approximately 6000 oceanographers from 75 countries. IPMA (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere) was represented by researcher A. Miguel Santos, who was one of the co-organizers and moderators of the session "OT53A. Democratizing Ocean Observation via Cost-Effective Fishing Vessel–Based Integrated and Other Approaches to Ocean Data Collection," which featured 11 oral presentations and 7 posters. The same researcher presented the poster entitled "OBSERVA.PT - The Portuguese autonomous ocean observing system" and was a co-author of "The Fishing Vessel ocean Observing Network (FVON): Collaborative Observations to Fill Key Data Gaps for a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Oceans and Coasts." The next Ocean Sciences Meeting will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, between February 22 and 27, 2026.
