Aquafish Project Meeting

2025-07-11 (IPMA)

The 4th meeting of the Executive Committee of the INTERREG Atlantic Area project AQUAFISH 0.0 (EAPA_0062/2022) - Aquaculture & Fisheries 0.0 - Improving the acceptance and social awareness in the consumption of sustainable marine food products developed under the zero-waste philosophy was held on 26 and 27 June 2025. This project aims to promote social acceptance and raise awareness among consumers and producers to adopt policies that reduce food losses and waste, in line with the "zero-waste" philosophy and based on the Quadruple Helix model.

The meeting was attended by Cláudia Afonso, Principal Researcher at IPMA, IP, and took place at the Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation (ARDITI), located in Funchal, Madeira Island.
As part of this meeting, several events were organised, including a visit to the offshore aquaculture facilities of the company Aquabaía - Sociedade de Aquacultura das Ilhas, Lda., located off the coast of Ribeira Brava, and to the facilities of the company Ilhapeixe - Sociedade de Peixe da Ilha, S.A., in Santa Cruz, which specialises in the processing and marketing of fresh and frozen fish.

Also noteworthy was a tasting event held at the Madeira Hotel and Tourism School (EHTM), which brought together a panel of national and international tasters. During the session, the functional products developed by the DivAV/IPMA team were presented, with the highlight being innovative nachos enriched with iodine obtained from the macroalga Gracilaria gracilis, cultivated by EPPO/IPMA in recirculating aquaculture systems. The nachos conquered the participants for their quality and flavour, reflecting the potential of marine-based functional foods. The tasting was accompanied by sauces carefully prepared by Chef Miguel Rodrigues and his EHTM team, which contributed to making the experience even more special.
