Identification

Research on this species began around the 2000, when it was intended to evaluate the mere cultivation potential with the aim of establishing resettlement programs in rocky areas of the coast (Restock Project).

Through research projects and in collaboration with the University of Algarve, gave the first steps in the capture and maintenance in captivity of this species.

Over the years they have developed protocols for controlling the laying season and obtaining eggs and larvae and growing number of young.

The quality was evaluated gamete and developed semen cryopreservation protocols in collaboration with other institutions.

Currently in Station Fish Farming Pilot Olhão there are two lots of mere players a total of 8 players with an average weight of 6.5 kg. The tanks have shelters and structures to mimic algae, which serve as hiding and refuge, as they are very territorial
