 Harmful Algal Bloom Bulletins

This bulletin describes the current situation and next week forecast of shellfish harvesting, based on the weekly monitoring of toxic phytoplankton species and levels of biotoxins in shellfish. These results are complemented with the analysis of satellite imagery and hydrodynamic modeling to predict transport of species by currents and their dispersal/accumulation along the coast.

The forecast bulletin shows areas of shellfish production that are expected to be interdicted (red) or open (green) to shellfish harvesting, due to marine biotoxins values in bivalve molluscs above the regulated EC limits or to the presence of toxic phytoplankton blooms. Whenever possible, the bulletin shows the trends for harvesting to be interdicted (orange) or allowed (yellow), based on changes in levels of toxins and phytoplankton cells in production areas as well as satellite images and model results. When it is not possible a forecast the production areas appear in white.
